Welcome–I’m excited you’re here! My name is Lisa Schader. I have a Masters in Accountancy with an emphasis in tax. My husband and I took a personal finance class together in college and I’ve been hooked ever since. During and after college, we worked extra jobs and lived lean–we even slept on an air mattress for an entire summer to save money (I regret that one–we’re making our chiropractor rich now). I believe that improving your financial situation is 80% mindset and 20% knowledge, but that little bit of knowledge is essential. Because we’d learned the essentials of personal finance, we knew that living lean and budgeting were not enough. We knew we needed to pack money away in retirement and investment accounts and making strategic career decisions–which we did–and it paid off! The day we realized we were on track for early retirement was an amazing day.
As my kids have gotten older, I found myself re-evaluating my career. I took every career test and personality test out there and they all told me the same thing: I like helping people. My greatest ambition in life is to ease suffering and help others live a great life. I was ready to throw my accounting degree out the window and become a therapist. As I investigated clinical psychology, I realized so many mental struggles come from stress which, in turn, often comes from finances. I realized that my background in accounting and tax and my passion for personal finance actually perfectly set me up to ease suffering. I’m here to help readers (you!) get your finances in shape so you can worry less and live more.
Not Confident About Your Finances?
Maybe you don’t feel great about where you stand financially. Maybe you’re not even sure where you stand–you think you’re probably okay, but you’re not confident about one aspect or another (retirement, asset protection, etc.). Maybe you regret past financial mistakes. I get it–I’ve been there and I’ve made a lot of those mistakes, too. Don’t stress about where you finances are or have been. Think about where they could be. I’m here to support you as you start moving that direction. I love this quote from Maya Angelou:
Do the best you can until you know better.
Then when you know better, do better.
Or Just Want To Learn More?
I worked for a “Big Four” accounting firm until I left to work part-time at home while caring for my three sons. As I started to explore the money-related content out there for stay-at-home moms, I was alarmed to see much of it was about couponing rather than the critical financial moves that actually create long-term wealth. Well, time’s up on that thinking! Women are smart and are often the ones making the family’s financial decisions. I decided to create a blog that would take the intimidation factor out of personal finance–everything from the basics like budgeting and getting out of debt to the more advanced stuff, like setting up 529 college savings plans and a family trust. I’m excited about all of it and I’m motivated to make it as easy-to-understand and doable as possible.
More About Me (In Case You’re Into TMI)
I live in the California Bay Area. Much of my time is spent trying to keep my tiny humans alive, but I spend as much time as possible on this blog. You might say it’s my fourth child (thank goodness I didn’t have to give birth to it–my last two boys were 9-pound posterior natural births, so I’mma go ahead and say we’re done with the three kids). My other passions:
- Music – I love going to concerts and performances! Some people think budgeting is all about spending as little money as possible. For me, it’s about setting your priorities. I spend so little on clothes because I don’t care! If you seeing me wearing nice jewelry, it was probably a gift. But concerts? Yes, I will save up for those.
- Fitness – I love volleyball and cycling. I tolerate running (if I have a good playlist or podcast to listen to).
- Travel–I love exploring new cities and cultures. My idea of a perfect day is getting dropped off in any new city and having all day to explore.
- My recipe for sanity = sleep + meditation + nature + friends + family + dance parties
Thanks for joining me here at Money Fit Life! <3 Lisa
